The short answer
Good chalk lettering is four habits: break the stick so it has a flat edge, pull strokes rather than push them, draw the skeleton of the letter before you give it any weight, and space the gaps rather than the letters. Everything else is refinement.
Holding the stick
A stick of chalk is not a pen and does not want a pen grip. A writing grip puts the stick nearly upright, so you work on a single point that rounds off unevenly and skids. Hold it further back, lower the angle so a side of the stick is in contact rather than a corner, and let your fingers clamp rather than hinge.
Then move from the shoulder and elbow, not the fingers. This is the difference between board writing and desk writing that nobody tells beginners: at desk size your fingers can draw a letter, but at board size a finger-drawn letter is a centimetre tall and everything larger has to come from the whole arm. Keep the wrist firm, the elbow away from your ribs, and stand far enough back that your arm is not folded. Across a wide board, walk sideways rather than reaching — a reached stroke curves.
Why you break the stick
A fresh cylinder gives you one thing: a round tip. Snap it in half and you get a clean, flat, elliptical face at the break. That face is a chisel. Held one way it draws a wide band; rotated ninety degrees it draws a hairline. A single broken stick therefore gives you thick and thin strokes with no change of tool and no change of pressure — which is exactly how broad-edge lettering has always worked, in chalk and in every other medium with a flat nib.
A shorter piece is also steadier, because a long stick levers every tremor in your hand. Most experienced board writers break a new stick immediately.
Pull, do not push
Drag the stick and it shears smoothly against the surface. Push it and the leading edge digs into the tooth of the board, catches, releases, catches again — and you get chatter: a stuttering, dotted line, often with a squeal and a shower of dust. The same happens with charcoal, with a broad-nib pen, and with a knife.
So plan strokes to be pulled: for most right-handed writers, downward and toward the body, plus left-to-right horizontals. Stems go top to bottom, never bottom to top. Where a letter needs an awkward direction, lift, reposition, and pull it as a separate stroke. Two clean pulled strokes beat one heroic pushed one, and the join is invisible if both end at the same point.
A note on character strokes
If you write Chinese or Japanese characters on a board, the traditional stroke order is doing the same job that "pull, do not push" does in a Latin alphabet. Top before bottom, left before right, horizontal before crossing vertical: those rules produce a sequence of pulled strokes with the hand always moving away from what it has already drawn, so you neither push into the tooth nor smear a finished stroke with your hand. Following the standard order on a board is not pedantry — it is why the characters come out evenly spaced and why your sleeve does not wipe half of them away.
Pressure: consistent by default, deliberate by exception
Beginners vary pressure by accident and then wonder why a word has three different greys in it. The default should be a light, even pressure held all the way through a stroke, including the ends. Most uneven lettering comes from pressing hard at the start, while the arm is still accelerating, and easing off at the end.
Pressure changes should be decisions. Three are worth learning:
- Weight for hierarchy. Press harder on the headline and lighter on the body, so that density reinforces the size difference.
- Weight within a letter. Slightly heavier on the downstrokes and lighter on the connecting strokes gives lettering the rhythm of broad-nib writing, without a broad nib.
- Deliberate lightness for guides. The faintest pressure you can manage, for baselines and construction lines you intend to wipe.
Speed matters as much as pressure. Move fast and the stick skips, leaving broken flying-white texture; move slowly and the powder packs solid. For lettering you want the packed version, which means board lettering is slower than it feels like it should be. Rushing a headline is the surest way to make it look scrappy.
Skeleton before weight
A letter has two separate properties: its shape and its thickness. Deal with them in that order, always. Draw every letter of a word as a thin single-line skeleton first — the bare bones of the form, at the right height and in the right place. Judge and fix the whole word at that stage. Then thicken.
Thickness hides errors while you are making them and reveals them once you stop. A crooked stem is obvious as a hairline and surprisingly hard to see inside a fat filled stroke — right up until you step back.
Spacing is about the gaps, not the letters
Letters are not spaced by putting an equal distance between them. They are spaced so that the apparent area of white between adjacent letters is equal, which is a different thing, because letters have different shapes. Two vertical stems side by side enclose a lot of space and need to sit closer together. Two diagonals leaning away from each other enclose an enormous wedge and need tucking in until it looks right.
There is no arithmetic for this, and the traditional advice is the best available: judge by eye, squint to blur the letters, and look for a gap that is bigger or smaller than its neighbours. Word spacing follows the same logic — a word space should be about the width of a round letter, and a word space that could hold two letters has broken the line into two pieces.
Serifs and shadows on a headline
Two cheap upgrades make a chalk headline look designed. The first is a slab serif: a short, straight cross-stroke at the top and bottom of each stem, drawn after the letter is filled. It costs one stroke per stem end, hides uneven stem endings, and locks the letters visually onto the baseline.
The second is a drop shadow. Pick one light direction and stick to it for the whole headline — say, light from the upper left, so every shadow falls to the lower right. Offset a copy of each letter's edge by a consistent distance and fill it, either solid in a duller tone or with simple parallel hatching. Consistency of direction and of offset is what makes or breaks it: a shadow that changes side halfway across a word looks like a mistake, because it is one. Keep both effects off body text — at small size they fill in and turn into mush.
What changes on glass
Doing this with a stylus on a tablet keeps most of the craft and moves two controls. There is no stick to break, so tilt does the flat-edge job: standing the stylus up gives you the narrow stroke and laying it over stretches the contact patch into the wide one, with the direction the barrel points deciding which way the wide edge lies. That is the digital equivalent of rotating a broken stick, except continuous rather than in two discrete positions — which means you have to hold the angle steady through the stroke.
Pressure keeps its own job: density and weight. So the split is clean. Tilt shapes the mark, pressure darkens it, and speed still fades and thins it, which means the rushing problem transfers intact.

One thing gets harder: a fingertip reports no angle, so there is no flat-edge trick available. Finger lettering is round-tipped by nature and speed is the only expressive control left — fine for rough layout, frustrating for headlines.
