Apple Pencil tilt shading: how it works and how to use it

What tilt shading really is, what the hardware reports, why some apps ignore it, and five habits that make tilt shading actually work on an iPad.

The short answer

Tilt shading is what happens when a drawing app reads the angle between the Apple Pencil and the glass, and uses that angle to change the shape of the mark rather than just its width. Stand the pencil up and you get a small, dense point. Lay it over towards the surface and the contact patch stretches into a long ellipse pointing the same way the barrel points — the digital equivalent of shading with the side of a pencil lead or a broken stick of chalk.

It is not a filter and it is not smoothing. If an app supports tilt properly, the same gesture you would use on paper produces the same kind of mark, and you never have to reach for a larger brush size to block in a shadow.

What the hardware actually reports

A drawing app does not receive "tilt" as a single number. It receives a touch event that carries, among other things, an altitude angle and an azimuth direction. Altitude is the angle between the barrel and the screen: upright is a right angle, nearly flat is close to zero. Azimuth is the compass direction the barrel is pointing in, projected down onto the glass.

Altitude decides how much

Altitude is what apps normalise into a "tilt amount". Upright means no tilt, flat means full tilt, and everything between is a smooth ramp. An app that only reads altitude can widen a stroke as you lay the pencil over, but the mark stays round — which reads as "thicker", not as "shaded".

Azimuth decides which way

Azimuth is what turns a widened dot into a real side stroke. The long axis of the contact ellipse follows the barrel. That is why, on paper, sweeping a tilted pencil sideways lays down a wide band, while sweeping it along its own axis lays down a narrow one. An app that ignores azimuth cannot reproduce that difference, and its "tilt shading" ends up feeling like an airbrush.

Three things change at once

In Flying Chalk, tilt drives three separate numbers per stroke, and each of the eight sticks carries its own values for them: how much the contact patch elongates, how much wider it gets overall, and whether the mark gets darker or lighter as it goes over. Charcoal elongates the most and darkens as it flattens; a pencil elongates a lot but goes paler and greyer on its side, the way real graphite does; a pen barely changes at all, because a ballpoint does not care how you hold it. Those differences are the entire point — a tilt engine that treats every tool the same is just one brush wearing eight hats.

How to actually shade with it

Lower your hand, do not press harder

The most common mistake is trying to get a broad, soft mass by pressing. That gives you a dark, narrow line. Drop the back of your hand towards the table so the barrel lies over, keep the pressure light, and sweep. Pressure controls density; tilt controls area. They are different controls and they solve different problems.

Sweep across the barrel, not along it

Because the contact patch follows the barrel direction, moving perpendicular to the pencil covers ground fastest, and moving along the pencil gives you a narrow, controlled edge. Shade the mass across, then turn your wrist and use the along-the-barrel direction to tighten the boundary. This is a hand habit, not a setting.

Build up in passes

Tilted marks are meant to be layered. Three light passes at different angles give a texture that reads as shading; one heavy pass gives a smear. On a chalk tool in particular, overlapping passes are what makes the dust look packed instead of painted.

Rotate the iPad, not just your wrist

Your wrist has a comfortable sweep range of maybe ninety degrees. If the shadow you want runs against that range, turn the tablet. Everyone who draws on paper does this automatically and then forgets to do it on glass.

Check the tool before blaming the tilt

If tilting does nothing, it is usually because the selected tool has no tilt response by design — a pen or a marker — or because the app itself does not read altitude. Switch to a chalk, charcoal or pastel tool and try again before concluding the pencil is broken.

When tilt will not work at all

A fingertip reports no tilt. There is no barrel, so there is no angle to read, and any app that pretended otherwise would be inventing data. Frequently asked questions

Does tilt shading need pressure sensitivity too?

No. They are independent. An app can read tilt without pressure and vice versa. Pressure changes how dark and how wide the mark is; tilt changes the shape of the contact patch and which way it points.

Why does tilt shading do nothing with my finger?

A fingertip has no barrel, so there is no angle for the system to report. Apps that handle this correctly fall back to a round mark driven by speed rather than faking a tilt value.

Why does tilt look different on different brushes?

Because a well-built brush engine gives each tool its own tilt response. Charcoal stretches and darkens on its side, a pencil goes pale and grey, a pen barely reacts. Real tools behave that way, so simulated ones should too.
