Nobody wins this argument, which is why it has been running for decades. What follows is the comparison as it actually plays out in a room, category by category, with no verdict at the end — because the right answer depends on the room, the subject and who is standing at the front.
Dust versus smell
Chalk sheds. Some of it lands on the ledge, some on the floor, some on the teacher's sleeve, and a little stays in the air. Low-dust chalk reduces this substantially but does not abolish it. Chalk dust is a nuisance around electronics, it is the reason board ledges need cleaning, and it is a real reason some people avoid chalk.
Whiteboard markers do not shed, but they do off-gas. Solvent-based markers have a strong smell that some people find unpleasant and that lingers in a small room with the windows shut; low-odour markers are much better and are what most places buy now. There is also a consumables problem in the other direction: dried-out markers. Every whiteboard in the world has a tray containing at least one dead marker that someone will pick up mid-sentence.
The honest framing is that both have a byproduct — one is particulate and one is vapour — and personal sensitivity decides which one bothers you. This page makes no health claims about either.
Erasability and ghosting
Chalk erases readily but never completely. Powder pressed into the surface stays, so an old board carries permanent faint ghosts of things written often. Getting a chalkboard genuinely clean requires washing it and letting it dry, and a board that is used and never washed slowly loses contrast.
A whiteboard erases to nothing when it is new and behaves beautifully. Over time it develops its own ghosting for a different reason: micro-scratches in the coating hold pigment, and once that starts it accelerates. The classic disasters are permanent marker used by accident and ink left on the board for a week, both of which can leave marks that ordinary erasing will not lift.
Neither surface stays pristine. The chalkboard degrades gradually and predictably. The whiteboard is better than the chalkboard for a while, then can degrade suddenly and be effectively unrecoverable.
Cost and lifetime
A good chalkboard is a long-lived object. Slate and porcelain enamel surfaces survive decades of use, and the running cost is chalk, which is close to nothing. The failure mode is slow: the surface polishes, stops biting, and eventually needs resurfacing.
Whiteboards vary enormously by grade. A cheap painted or melamine board is inexpensive and will start ghosting within a couple of years of heavy use. A porcelain whiteboard costs considerably more and lasts far longer. The running cost is markers, continuously, forever, and markers get lost as well as used up.
Over a ten-year horizon in a heavily used room, a good chalkboard is usually the cheaper object and a cheap whiteboard is usually the most expensive, because it gets replaced. Over two years in a lightly used room, the arithmetic goes the other way.
Under a projector
This one is decisive for a lot of rooms. A whiteboard doubles as a projection screen — badly, because of glare and hot spots, but well enough that people do it constantly. A dark chalkboard cannot: projected light disappears into it.
Conversely, when a projector is running in a dim room, a chalkboard beside it is still readable while a whiteboard often is not, because the whiteboard is reflecting the ambient light of the projector and the room and washing out. Rooms that mix projection and writing tend to want both surfaces, which is one of the reasons so many rooms have both.
On camera
Recorded and streamed teaching changed this comparison and mostly favours the chalkboard. A dark matte board with bright marks is easy for a camera: the writing is the brightest thing in a dark field, autoexposure settles, and there is no specular reflection to chase.
A whiteboard is hard on camera. It is a large bright surface, so the camera's exposure pulls down and the presenter standing in front of it becomes a silhouette. Its gloss reflects lights and windows straight into the lens, and those reflections move when the camera moves. Marker colours that are perfectly readable in the room — red, orange, light green — can come out thin or nearly invisible in a compressed video stream.
None of this is insurmountable, but it takes lighting work that a chalkboard does not need.
Legibility from the back of the room
At the back of a large room, what matters is stroke thickness and contrast. Chalk on a dark board gives a broad, dense, matte mark that holds up well at distance, and the same mark looks the same from every seat because it scatters light diffusely. A broken stick used on its side can produce a very wide stroke with no effort at all.
A whiteboard marker's stroke thickness is fixed by the nib, so a chisel tip is essential in a large room and a fine tip is unreadable past a few rows. The board is also glossy enough that some seats get glare. On the other hand, black marker on white is very high contrast when there is no glare, and coloured markers stay readable in a way that coloured chalk on a dark board does not — a real advantage for anything that needs several colours at body size, like diagrams and marked-up equations.
Writing speed and hand fatigue
Chalk has friction. That friction is feedback: you can feel the board, control pressure by feel, and produce genuinely variable stroke weight from one stick. Fast writing on a chalkboard is slightly slower than on a whiteboard and noticeably more physical, and after an hour your arm knows about it. The friction also produces the noise, which ranges from unnoticeable to actively distressing depending on the person and the stick.
A marker glides. Long sessions are less tiring and writing is faster, but the lack of friction is exactly why whiteboard handwriting tends to be looser and sloppier than the same person's chalk handwriting. There is no resistance to write against, and no pressure control at all — a marker gives you the width of its nib and nothing else.
Where each one is clearly better
A chalkboard is the better choice for large rooms with long, continuous writing — mathematics, languages, anything where the board fills up over an hour and the previous ten minutes need to stay visible. It also wins for recorded teaching, for durability in a room that gets hard use, and anywhere writing feel matters.
A whiteboard is the better choice for small rooms, for anything colour-coded, for surfaces that double as projection screens, for magnetic boards holding paper, and anywhere dust would be a problem. It is also the better surface for quick collaborative scribbling, because it is fast and forgiving.
Plenty of rooms simply install both, which is not indecision. They are different tools with different failure modes, and the cost of having both is mostly wall.
The same argument in a drawing app
Choosing a board in software is a smaller version of the same decision, minus dust, smell and cost. What survives is the part about contrast and colour, and it matters more than people expect, because a layout designed for one ground usually fails on the other.
On a dark ground, your brightest mark is the strong element and colour is weak — so keep body text light and use colour to mark zones. On a light ground everything inverts: dark lines are strong, pale colours vanish, and a colour scheme that read beautifully on green will look washed out on paper.
